Valentina Caruso Sports Facility - Largo Chiaro Davanzati - Regeneration and adaptation of the sports facility

The project involves the redevelopment of the Valentina Caruso Sports Facility with the recovery of the structure, abandoned since 2018, and the return of a state-of-the-art facility in terms of energy efficiency to the citizens through the use of technologies, renewable sources and environmentally friendly materials.
The redevelopment of the facility will enhance the provision of sports and social inclusion services in an area on the eastern outskirts of Rome where there is a shortage of facilities. Renovation of the existing buildings and artefacts will be planned, as well as the renovation of outdoor sports areas, with the renovation of the neighbouring park through equipped paths. The sport activities that can be practised will be five-a-side football, basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis, padel, as well as crossfit, fitness and parkour in the public park. The project is drawn up with sustainability and energy efficiency objectives in mind.

Redevelopment of Villa Ada's plant heritage

The redevelopment project includes several operations, such as vegetation clearing, the restoration of avenues, the maintenance of forestry areas, and the construction of elevated walkways to ensure access for people with mobility difficulties or strollers. Additionally, outdoor educational spaces will be created. In addition, new native trees will be planted to promote biodiversity and enhance the resilience of forests against pest infestations.

The maintenance of forestry areas aims to protect valuable trees and manage weedy vegetation, through care, deep fertilisation and endotherapy. Thanks to Green Spaces, the new tool for managing the city's tree heritage, a georeferenced census has been carried out, along with approximately 5,000 VTA (tree stability assessment) tests.  Additionally, the canal fed by the Acquedotto Vergine in the valley between Colle Roccolo and Colle Cavalle Madri has been restored. Originally designed as an English-style park, this area has now been cleared of the brambles that once covered it. The canal, which provides drinking water, is a strategic point for migratory birds, offering them a valuable staging area with clean water within the city.

Villa Sciarra - Consolidation of landslide areas

Interventions at Villa Sciarra aim at securing the slopes and managing surface and underground water, in order to allow the restoration of the existing buildings and historical furnishings. Over the years, the Janiculum walls surrounding Villa Sciarra on the eastern side have suffered various instabilities, including the collapse of the retaining walls in two specific spots:

  • Landslide in Via Aurelio Saffi in the 1970s: This landslide was subsequently restored using the technique of soil nailing with shotcrete. The instability was caused by the sliding of the surface layers, known as pyroclastic layers, which overlap the clayey interlayers, also resulting in the formation of perched water tables. This phenomenon has been studied by the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) in its analysis of the Monteverde hill landslides of Via Aurelio Saffi and Via Dall'Ongaro, as well as by other previous studies.
  • Landslide of the containing wall in Via Dandolo: the subsidence of the containing wall also affected some private properties. The cause of the instability is again related to sliding of the surface layers and clayey interlayers.

Groundwater containment and regulation works may be needed to ensure the safety of the terraces supported by the Janiculum walls. These interventions will aim to prevent future instabilities and ensure the stability of the surrounding embankments.

Caput Mundi: Development of an integrated app with booking, ticketing and social services (The Roman Land) to help visitors discover the cultural and tourist heritage of the city of Rome

The APP will offer tourists integrated access to a wide range of information related to their journey. In addition, it will support the necessary features to create customised tours by providing booking, ticketing, and real-time information on local public services. The final goal is to provide tourists with a comprehensive, integrated tool to easily plan and manage their journey while enhancing their overall experience.
The main features of the App will be as follows:

  • detailed tourist information: the App will offer a wide variety of tourist information, covering the main attractions, places of interest, local events, culture and history of the destination. Tourists will be able to plan their journey quickly and intuitively by accessing this information;
  • booking and ticketing: the App will enable tourists to book accommodation, means of transport and activities through an optimised process;
  • real-time information: the ‘Tourist Virtual Assistant’ will provide up-to-date information on local public services, including public transport and weather forecasts;
  • social media integration: the App will be integrated with the major social media platforms, allowing tourists to share their travel experience, photos and stories with their friends and family;
  • voice assistant accessibility: tourists will be able to use voice commands to get information and bookings for a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

In conclusion, the ‘Tourist Virtual Assistant’ App aims to enhance the travel experience of tourists by offering a comprehensive and integrated platform to access all the necessary information and services.

Viale Palmiro Togliatti Tram Line

Due to roadworks, traffic circulation at the junction of Viale P. Togliatti and Via Prenestina will change from 9 April until the works are completed. Further information is available at www.romamobilita.it.

The scope of the project is on one of the main axes of the city, running through Cinecittà, Centocelle and Colli Aniene. The entire route will be around 8 km with 19 intermediate stops, starting from the terminus in Via Orazio Pulvillo, near the Subaugusta underground station, to the terminus near the Ponte Mammolo interchange.

The project involves the construction of a new tramway headquarters in the middle of the central traffic divider, particularly wide. At present, the space is characterised by green areas, the cycle track, car parking spaces, waste areas used as scrapyards, as well as two rows of tall trees.

The project will include infrastructural works, one of which will be of high importance, relating to the completion of the road and rail flyover ramps, which will allow the overrun of via Collatina and the FR2 (High Speed and Rome Sulmona; TAV-AT-01-102) railway.

It is planned to supply 20 units of battery-powered rolling stock for use on catenary-free routes, which will be housed and maintained at the Atac depot in Via Prenestina. Line 10 Ponte Mammolo-Basilica San Paolo will be provided for the new infrastructure.

Caput Mundi: Sport and disability: a sustainable project to enhance the Sport City located in the Esposizione Universale di Roma 42 (EUR) area

The project proposal aims to increase the appeal of sport through various initiatives. Firstly, the “Mariner” sports centre located near Parco Centrale del Lago (Central Lake Park) will undergo renovation to host paralympic canoeing, rowing and sailing activities. This will include the construction of a jetty with reserved access, a slipway and storage, as well as changing rooms and toilets suitable for people with disabilities.
Additionally, a new sports centre will be built in a green area owned by EUR S.p.A. The centre will include sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and rugby courts, along with support facilities such as changing rooms, toilets, storehouses, and a bar.
To facilitate mobility and enhance accessibility for disabled people to sporting events and activities, a specific electric shuttle service will be provided to connect the Sport City with various areas.
All initiatives aim to engage people with disabilities in sport and enhance the infrastructure and the services necessary for full and inclusive participation.

Redevelopment of historical paving: transformation of the roadway from cobblestone to bituminous conglomerate and vice versa

The intervention concerns the main roads in the territory of Municipality 1, adjacent to the Vatican City. Some of these streets will be redeveloped according to the "Redevelopment Plan for Historical Paving". Via Crescenzo and Via Cola di Rienzo will see the transformation of the paving from cobblestone to bituminous conglomerate. At the same time, other roads will be converted from bituminous conglomerate to sampietrino as part of the "Sampietrino Plan". The activities will involve main and secondary roads, some of which are crucial for traffic flow. The design and implementation approach will focus on the identification of specific strategies and the coordination of the different intervention phases, taking into account the characteristics of the road foundations. The area involved will be approximately 20,000 square metres.
