Caput Mundi: Villa Doria Pamphilj - Exedra of the theatre garden and Nymphaeum of the Tritons: restoration of decorative elements and lighting enhancement of the complex

The Exedra shows a poor state of preservation and widespread degradation of the surfaces, attacked by infesting vegetation. Two of the 20 pots placed on the balustrade have missing parts at the top of the rim and the copy of the statue of Neptune placed in the centre of the Exedra was destroyed in April 2020. Large cracks opened up in the perimeter wall in the north-western sector, due to the 2016 earthquake.
The interventions on the Exedra will include:

  • historical-stylistic restoration;
  • reinforcement of the north-western wall;
  • cleaning of surfaces;
  • restoration of original decorative elements composing the surface decoration;
  • renovation of the water system;
  • restoration of the pots on the balustrade;
  • renovation of the replica of the Neptune statue;
  • lighting enhancement of the structure.

The Nymphaeum complex shows a poor state of conservation, especially in the case of the fountain water supply. The intervention will include:

  • the recovery of the cave from the infiltration of infesting vegetation roots found in the upper part of the fountain;
  • reinforcement of walls decoration;
  • restoration of the original jeux d’eau through the renovation of the water system;
  • the restoration of the functionality and decoration of the access gate and the corresponding gate;
  • renovation of the replica of the Pan statue;
  • lighting enhancement of the structure.

Caput Mundi: Lift at the Trajan's Markets and pedestrian walkway for visiting the Fora

The intervention concerns the area located in the lower western part of the historical complex of Trajan’s Markets - Museum of the Imperial Fora. This area includes the North Hall, with exclusive access from the Trajan's Forum, the Hall of the small hemicycle and the connecting space between the two halls. The latter has a vaguely trapezoidal shape and is located at an altitude of approximately 4.60 metres compared to the floor level of both halls.
Specifically, the following activities are planned:

  • static and seismic vulnerability assessment;
  • archaeological excavation of the stratigraphic section in the hall of the Small Hemicycle, spared by the interventions of the 1930s;
  • creation of vertical connections by inserting two lifts
  • demolition of existing architectural barriers in the lower part of the monumental complex;
  • structural consolidation;
  • adaptation to fire regulations;
  • technological systems;
  • installation of educational panels.

The completion of the walkways is the direct consequence of a programme for the complete use of the entire area of the Imperial Fora. The walkway, once it arrives at the eastern hemicycle of the Trajan’s Markets, runs parallel to the level of the portico and is connected with a right-angled arm to the northern end room where visitors, even those with motor disabilities, will be able to access the hall and ascend to the different levels of the Trajan’s Markets with a lifting platform. The construction of two sanitary rooms is planned In the border area between the Fora of Nerva and Augustus, in one of the modern arches, adequate in size for use by visitors with disabilities. The walkway, which will also be accessible by visitors with disabilities, will be equipped with rest areas with educational panels in silk-screened glass with the recomposition of the framed image using graphic signs: a simple and effective tool that contributes to the appreciation of the original volumes. Alongside these, and in the interest of complete accessibility, Braille panels are also envisaged, as well as the implementation of at least two self-supporting external LIS (Italian Sign Language) videos at the halfway point and at the end.

Colli d'Oro Park - New construction of a sport facility

The Colli d'Oro park is a large green area located in Labaro, within which stands an unfinished abandoned and unsafe sports facility with thousands of square metres of green space. The project envisages punctual work to restore the greenery, with the aim of returning a reclaimed area to the citizens and enhancing the offer of public services. The project will allow the redevelopment of the urban area with the construction of a new multi-purpose indoor sports facility with 1,500 seats and a total area of 3,700 square metres. Fields will be created for: five-a-side football, basketball, volleyball, crossfit, fitness trail, skate park, mountain biking, while respecting the area's natural features. The intervention is drafted in line with the sustainability and energy efficiency objectives of the principle of “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) to the environment and consistent with the target of 20 per cent less as for the nearly Zero Energy Buildings standard. The ultimate goal is to enhance the park, making it a sports area with free and open access, in order to promote the culture of sport as a tool for social inclusion and integration.

Caput Mundi: Grottoni del Campidoglio

The planned works include historical-archaeological enhancement and construction and systems engineering, the latter completing what was already achieved in 2007. The works will be divided into different phases:

  • enhancement of the cavities through laser scanner detection, stratigraphic reading of the signs left by the excavation tools, identification of the type of masonry equipment present and typological seriation of the plans to reconstruct their chronology and use over the centuries;
  • research and creation of graphic and photographic documentation to be placed along the itineraries, also with the aid of video installations;
  • recovery and safety of the cavities through the renovation of the floors, rehabilitation of the wall surfaces and creation of closing elements to create areas that allow the warehouse to be organised into independently manageable sectors;
  • adoption of measures to mitigate the risk of exposure to ionising radiation;
  • completion of the electrical and alarm system in all spaces;
  • expansion of use by opening it to the public with the creation of new itineraries, including for disabled visitors.

Caput Mundi: Via Alessandrina - Archaeological excavation for reunification of the Fora of Augustus, Trajan and Nerva

The intervention will focus on the protection, conservation and enhancement of the monument. The intervention will involve the removal of a road section which is currently extraneous to the surrounding urban landscape. The main objective is to visually and physically reunite the monumental areas of the Fora of Augustus, Trajan and Nerva, improving the understanding and use of the area. Specifically, the project involves the implementation of the following works:

  • archaeological excavation of the remaining stretch of via Alessandrina;
  • conservative restoration and enhancement of wall structures;
  • structural consolidation;
  • reconstructions and anastylosis of ancient architectural contexts;
  • creation of a visit itinerary.

Caput Mundi: Templum Pacis - archaeological excavation, north-east sector

The intervention will take place in the archaeological excavation of the north-eastern sector of the Templum Pacis. An archaeological area will be created, accessible from various points and fully usable. Visitors will be able to access the Templum Pacis from Trajan’s Column, from Largo della Salara Vecchia, from the Torre dei Conti and from the Forum of Nerva. This way, the Templum Pacis and, through a circuit of walkways, the entire complex of the Imperial Fora and Trajan’s Markets, will become accessible. Furthermore, the two sectors of the Templum Pacis brought to light in 1998-2000 could be joined through the creation of a “bridge” connection. Specifically, the project involves the implementation of the following works:

  • archaeological excavation;
  • conservative restoration of ancient and post-ancient structures;
  • safety measures, anti-seismic and static monitoring of ancient and post-ancient structures;
  • creation of accessible itineraries for visitors (walkways and lift; and, later, on the opposite side, a “bridge” connection on the route of the ancient Via di S. Lorenzo in Miranda);
  • electrical and lighting systems;
  • museum creation, arrangement works and educational communication of archaeological areas.

Autonomy paths for people with disabilities - A modo Tuo

The project will be developed through three lines of activities aimed at fostering autonomy and inclusion through customised solutions and job opportunities:

  • definition and activation of the individualised project: in this phase, various interventions will be defined to foster the autonomy of people with disabilities. The individual project will identify the objectives to be achieved, outlining a path to promote living and working autonomy, taking into account the specific needs of each individual.
  • housing: the second line of activities will focus on the adaptation of living spaces, the implementation of home automation technologies and remote assistance. Each flat can accommodate a maximum of six people. The housing projects, consisting of one or two flat groups, may involve between 7 and 10 people. Each home will be customised and equipped with tools and technologies that facilitate remote interaction, providing specific solutions according to the needs of each participant;
  • employment: the third line of activities will focus on the development of digital skills in order to facilitate the employment of people with disabilities. Job opportunities will be enhanced through specific training courses and the acquisition of skills in digital technologies.

PALA FIJLKAM Sports Centre – Renovation and upgrading of sports facilities

The project involves a complex energy upgrade to improve the technological and management quality of the centre. The complex comprises multiple facilities, including a sports arena, guest houses, gyms, classrooms, a communal lounge, a canteen, a tennis court, a large car park, and the halls dedicated to exhibitions and meetings. It is the venue for sporting and social events and is a model for the activities organised by the Italian Judo Wrestling Karate and Martial Arts Federation. The intervention mainly consists of the installation of energy production systems from renewable sources (such as photovoltaic and/or wind power systems) that will be integrated with energy storage systems. The building envelopes will also be affected by the interventions, to correct thermal bridges and the insulation of some opaque dispersing structures. As part of the renovation, the most energy-intensive current installations and building envelopes will be upgraded to enhance the efficiency of the facility.
