Interventions for environmental recovery of the Tiber

The main objective of this series of interventions is to aim at a global recovery of the Tiber in the urban area of Rome through an environmental reassessment of the entire river stretch, from Castel Gubileo to the delta. The Tiber River represents a unique monumental historical asset for Rome, a strategic resource and an opportunity for the socio-economic development of the Capital. The planned interventions also include an assessment of the current conditions of the river and the implementation of measures, structural and non-structural, for sustainable and safe use of the water mirror.

In the urban stretch of the river, along its numerous loops, deposits of sediment and loose material transported by the current have piled up over time, creating a natural barrier of the dock that houses grass and trees.

The control and removal of vegetation and any obstacles present within the riverbed is essential for the accessibility of the docks, for greater outflow capacity and to limit the number of floods of the river on the walkable level.

Redevelopment of metro line A stations: Anagnina

This intervention plans for the complete renovation of the 27 stations on Rome's Metro A Line and involves the renovation of each station's infrastructure and design.

Activities will include the replacement of parts for transfer systems (escalators, elevators) to promote accessibility, the creation of systems for the collection and conveyance of rainwater, the waterproofing of areas such as atriums and platforms, and the revision of existing transfer systems. The interventions will be completed with the renovation of station finishings, following a specific redevelopment project for each station regarding the renovation of walls, ceilings, flooring, lighting, and signs for functionality and safety inside the stations. The interior spaces will be redesigned and updated with special attention to spaces dedicated to ATAC staff, such as ticket offices and station booths.

In addition, a series of raised crossings will be constructed at the turnaround points, with the aim of moderating the speed of passing vehicles. The intervention also concerns the complete renovation of the horizontal signs to ensure an adequate safety standard.

Ponte Giulio Rocco

Ponte Giulio Rocco, a bridge which crosses the railway in Municipality VIII and connects the Ostiense and Garbatella neighbourhoods, has been closed since 26 October 2016, following the earthquake that hit Central Italy. Demolition and reconstruction work on the bridge began in 2024 thanks to an investment of € 4.8 million, 50% co-financed by Roma Capitale and the Lazio Region, which is the implementing party through the in-house company Astral.

The intervention has a high degree of complexity due to the strategic location of the bridge, which crosses the Roma-Lido railway line and Metro B. This requires the utmost care, particularly during the demolition phase, in order to avoid disruption to the public transport network and ensure safety. The new bridge will be built in metal and will be 12 metres wide, compared to the 6.40 metres of the old structure. In addition, a widening of the pavements is planned, with the aim of improving access along the city's central junctions.

Public toilets at Via Fra' Albenzio

In order to provide an adequate welcome for pilgrims and visitors, a programme is planned to upgrade and redevelop the toilets. The upgrading and redevelopment program is divided into two lines of intervention and includes:

  • Line 141a, renovation of 17 existing public toilets, financed under Prime Ministerial Decree 11/06/2024, for an amount of 3,000,000.00;
  • Line 141b, interventions to replace existing Automated Toilet Services, financed under Commissioner’s Ordinance Rep. no. 2025/2, Prot. RM/47 of 07/01/2025, for an amount of € 700,000.00.

The redevelopment of the existing bathrooms will ensure compliance with safety and accessibility regulations, with the aim of eliminating architectural barriers and improving facilities. The intervention will increase the total number of service points to approximately seventy, distributed mainly in high-flow areas.

New Municipal Offices Headquarters – Municipality IX

The construction of the new headquarters for the municipal public offices of Municipality IX is part of the urban recovery programme for the Laurentino neighbourhood.

The offices will be housed in an independent building located in the centre of an area of approximately 7,000 square metres, adjacent to Via Laurentina and the new civic square.

Specifically, the structure will include an underground level designated for parking and three interconnected above-ground buildings: Block A, comprising 6 floors, Block B, comprising 5 floors, Block C, which will house the Council Chamber overlooking the new civic square.

The building will have a total area of 8,500 square metres, while the garage, covering 2,000 square metres, will have a capacity of approximately 60 parking spaces.

The internal spaces, including staircases and lifts, have been designed to separate the flows of staff and citizens. The outdoor spaces have been conceived to ensure accessibility for all and to integrate harmoniously with the square.

The facility will accommodate 285 employees and 50 elected representatives. The average daily turnout is estimated at around 200 visitors, with peaks of up to 400 during peak hours.

Verano-Tiburtina Tramway

The project connects the current tramway through Piazzale del Verano with Tiburtina Station. The new route branches off from the junction of Piazzale del Verano with Viale Regina Elena and develops along the direction of Via Tiburtina, using the existing fast lane.

The new section, 1.3 km long, will have a great impact from a transport point of view, as it will connect the tram network with the city's second railway station.

It will be possible to put the section into operation regardless of the availability of the new rolling stock, as it will all be equipped with an overhead contact line.

The intervention is part of the Rome Capital PUMS (Sustainable Mobility Urban Plan) approved in February 2022 and is included in the Metropolitan City of Roma Capitale PUMS approved on 13/12/2024

121 new trams

The Spanish company CAF - Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles won the tender for the supply of 121 new trams, marking a significant step for the capital's urban mobility. The new vehicles, 33.5 meters long, will be able to carry up to 215 passengers, with 68 seats and 2 spaces for people with disabilities, who will be able to take advantage of access platforms and all the modern equipment that guarantee them a more comfortable and safe trip.

All vehicles will be equipped with air conditioning, video surveillance systems, sound diffusion and passenger counters, as well as an anti-collision sensor with pedestrians. Part of the supply will be bimodal: the trainsets will be powered by the overhead network or only with batteries for autonomous driving.

The project foresees the arrival of the first tram by the fourth quarter of 2025, followed by the phased delivery of an additional 59 trams through to July 2028.
