Redevelopment of Porta Maggiore tramway depot

Among the interventions scheduled in preparation for the Jubilee, the renewal of the tram fleet is planned to improve the quality of the surface rail transport service. The new trams will replace the current vehicles, namely the Stanga trams (supplied in 1948) and the Socimi trams (dating back to 1990). The vehicles will be equipped with several innovative features, such as the ability to operate autonomously with batteries on non-electrified sections. During construction of the designated maintenance site, the new trams will be placed in the Porta Maggiore depot. The unique characteristics of the new vehicles will require the following specific interventions:

  • construction of steel structures, equipped with security systems, to access the upper deck;
  • creation of two overhead cranes to move equipment on the trams, with the simultaneous removal of the overhead network above the tracks intended for this activity;
  • renovation of a warehouse to accommodate a new underfloor wheel lathe for wheel maintenance and an automatic system to measure the geometric parameters of the wheels;
  • installation of a new system for washing undercarriage components.

ATAC transportation stop plan

The project provides for the installation of new bus shelters and electronic poles at a total of 840 + 40 stops across the public transport network. The goal is to improve the experience of those using surface public transportation near Vatican City, the basilicas, Jubilee event venues, and major tourist attractions. Many of the new poles and shelters have already been installed, but the modernization work continues.

Specifically, the project involves a total of:

  • 435 smart bus shelters + 40 additional shelters funded through project financing. All shelters are equipped with interactive information screens that provide real-time waiting times and additional services. Twenty-five of the new shelters are “green,” meaning they include a space with integrated vegetation. The average unit cost is €96,250 + VAT (including installation and connection);
  • 405 electronic poles displaying real-time wait times; average unit cost €32,000 + VAT (including installation and connection).
  • The project also includes:
  • replacing the booths at 14 terminal stations with new structures equipped with offices and restrooms for staff, plus waiting shelters and information displays for customers on all lines;
  • renovation and maintenance of all shelters and fixed and electronic poles installed in Rome (over 8,000 stops);
  • relocation of the approximately 200 shelters removed to make way for new ones in non-central areas of the city.

The complete map of shelters and poles already installed throughout the city is available at this link https://viaggiacon.atac.roma.it/RomaSiTrasforma/.

Rome-Lido Railway: Giardino di Roma station

The intervention is aimed at constructing a new "Giardino di Roma" stop located on Via di Malafede, between Via Cristoforo Colombo and Via Ostiense. Its realisation will allow inhabitants to reach the Capital, the coast, and other exchange points. The new stop along the Rome-Lido line will be made in a protected location, without level crossings. Platforms will allow floor-level access with a railway-type clearance gauge width of 3,150 mm. The stop will consist of two buildings arranged longitudinally to the existing tracks. A connection between the two buildings will be created with the construction of an overpass located about 7 m from the rail level. The design of the new station, submitted to the Service Conference in 2013, will need to be reviewed again and will include the construction of ancillary works for station accessibility.

Completion of the connection between Via Gregorio XI and Via Aurelia

The intervention will aim to create a connection between Via Gregorio XI, Via Aurelia towards the city centre, and the local roads south of Via Aurelia, which are currently one-way and only allow entry onto Via Aurelia in the direction of G.R.A. This intervention will complete the segment of Via Gregorio XI between Via di Val Cannuta and Via Aurelia, previously carried out through an urban planning agreement, also provides for its extraordinary maintenance. To respond to the needs of the community, the Department for the Coordination of Infrastructure Development and Urban Maintenance obtained preliminary opinions from the bodies concerned during a Services Conference, in accordance with art. 14bis of Italian Law no. 241/90.
