Caput Mundi: Insula Ara Coeli

The intervention aims to preserve, enhance, and transmit an asset of the highest historical, architectural, artistic, and landscape value: one of the rare surviving examples of Roman architecture developed on multiple levels.

The objectives of the operation are:

- the preservation of the asset;

- improving physical accessibility and use;

- the restoration of adequate security levels;

- the increase in participation;

- the enhancement and restoration.

The new access ramp to the Insula of Ara Coeli, located on the right side of the Vittoriano, will allow access to both the ancient ground floor, which is currently below street level, and the first floor, now accessible only from the side of the Ara Coeli Staircase.

In the external area, the upper portions of some rooms still buried today will be made visible, offering a clearer perception of the original extent of the ancient building complex. The path will continue to the second floor via an existing staircase that will be reconfigured to align with the new first-floor level, after the archaeological excavation uncovers the original floor.

To ensure accessibility for people with disabilities, a lift platform will be installed at the northwest corner of the monument, connecting the first floor to the second.

Given its location in one of the most critical traffic areas in Rome and, not least, the presence of underground archaeological structures, a solution has been designed that utilizes the existing gap between the ground floor, the garden, and the pavement, inserting a new staircase that will connect the current street level to the original level of the Insula, located 9 meters below.

Caput Mundi: San Paolo alla Regola - restoration of the domus

The restoration and enhancement project of the archaeological complex of San Paolo alla Regola includes a series of interventions aimed at making accessible the parts currently not open to visitors, improving conservation and enhancing the important historical and archaeological heritage of the site.

One of the central aspects of the project concerns the creation of new itineraries, which will allow visitors to explore the entire archaeological complex in an organised and informative way. Areas that cannot be visited will be identified and equipped through archaeological excavation interventions that will allow new finds and structures to be highlighted and enhanced.

The restoration interventions will be carried out on the masonry and metal elements of the complex, through the restoration and conservation of the walls, ensuring structural stability and preserving the original appearance of the architectural elements. Measures will be adopted to improve the ventilation and dehumidification systems of the rooms, in order to favour ideal conditions for the conservation of the finds and frescoes. Technical verification will be carried out to evaluate the state of the structures and the intervention methods.

The project will include interventions to improve the accessibility of the site, allowing all visitors, including those with disabilities or reduced mobility, to fully enjoy the archaeological complex.

Public assistance services will be developed, such as historical models and explanatory panels, offering detailed information on the historical and archaeological context of the site and helping to make the visitor experience more engaging and informative.

Finally, the external space of the archaeological complex will be redeveloped to create a welcoming and attractive environment, through the arrangement of gardens, the creation of pedestrian paths and the installation of appropriate street furniture.

Caput Mundi: Conservative restoration of the Southern Hemicycle of the Circus Maximus - Rome

Overall, the project for the recovery and enhancement of the archaeological complex involves excavation, analysis, restoration, consolidation and securing of structures. Appropriate lighting systems and, if necessary, drainage works will be constructed. The result will be the recovery and enhancement of an important archaeological heritage, offering the public an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the history and beauty of the complex.
An initial work will involve excavating the rooms currently covered by buryings in order to reveal the underlying structures and understand their layout and organisation. The excavation will be followed by a thorough analysis of the structures found, which will provide valuable information about the history and function of the complex.
Next, the restoration, consolidation and securing of the archaeological environments will be carried out. These interventions aim to preserve the structures in the long term, ensuring their stability and preservation. Static consolidation and restoration measures will be taken to restore the structural integrity of areas currently propped and/or covered.
As for the systems, a lighting system will be installed to highlight the archaeological structures. If necessary, drainage works will be constructed to manage the water table and prevent moisture or seepage problems that could damage the structures.
Another intervention will involve a surface excavation of the sector of the hemicycle interposed between the two already visible structures. The excavation will provide a better understanding of the constructive continuity and relationship between the various parts of the archaeological complex.
Finally, restoration and consolidation of the structures currently visible in the hemicycle on the Aventine side will be carried out, with the aim of restoring the structures to their former glory and ensuring their proper enjoyment by visitors.
