Caput Mundi: Restoration of the Cupid's Fountain in Villa Doria Pamphilj

The fountain is currently in a poor state of conservation due to the damage to decorative elements and lack of maintenance. In 2003, and most recently in April 2020, the Fountain of the Putto was subject to vandalism, which caused the systematic demolition of the 12 decorative fleurs-de-lis. A preliminary maintenance activity has already been performed, including the removal of the biological patina and limescale deposits, along with the restoration of the profile of pillars and basins. The restoration activities will focus on the following aspects:

  • historical-stylistic and conservative restoration;
  • reconstruction and installation of the surviving fragments of heraldic fleurs-de-lis and reproduction of new copies;
  • cleaning of the basin;
  • restoration of the water functioning of the original jeux d'eau;
  • lighting enhancement.

Caput Mundi: Restoration of the Hemicycles of Piazza del Popolo

The conservation project will focus on the restoration of the two hemicycles, the related fountains and the sculptural apparatus located in the square. The restoration of the travertine roofs and the general maintenance of the brick curtain will be included in the interventions.
The preliminary activities will relate to the verification of the sculptures that adorn the hemicycles in order to evaluate their integrity. The restoration of stone surfaces and metal elements will include consolidation, chemical and mechanical cleaning, biocidal treatment, verification, removal and reconstruction of non-functional grouting. The metal connections will be examined and possibly replaced, with a consequent aesthetic revision of the entire complex, including the application of anti-graffiti measures.
As regards the fountains, the waterproofing layer of the water basins will be restored, the condition of the screeds will be checked and any damage will be sealed. Washing, localised consolidation, extraction of soluble salts, disinfection, weeding, re-grouting and, if necessary, replacement of damaged elements will be carried out on the brick walls. Furthermore, verification will be carried out on the functioning of the water systems and the artistic lighting of the two fountains.
This conservation project aims to restore and preserve the integrity of the structures, sculptures and fountains, ensuring their long-term functionality and protection.

Caput Mundi: Restoration of the Fountain in Piazza Mazzini

The restoration project includes a wide range of interventions affecting various elements of the fountains, such as the central basin, the sculptural apparatus, the surrounding mosaic promenade and the seating. Below is a detailed list of the work:

  • restoration of all sculptural decorations. Restoration works will be carried out on all the sculptural elements of the fountains. This will involve cleaning the sculptures, repairing any damages, restoring missing or deteriorated parts and the application of a final coating to preserve integrity;
  • restoration of metal elements and fence. Railings, brackets and other decorative details will be subject to intervention such as cleaning, removal of rust or corrosion, restoration or replacement of damaged parts and the application of a protective coating to prevent future deterioration. In addition, the fence surrounding the fountains will undergo restoration and maintenance;
  • restoration of the waterproofing layer within the water basin. The existing waterproofing layer will be removed to reinforce the underlying screed and prepare the bottom of the basin for the application of a new waterproofing layer. This will guarantee the integrity and tightness of the water basins in the fountains;
  • restoration and arrangement of the river breccia mosaic pavement. The pavement surrounding the fountains will be restored by carrying out a thorough cleaning, repair of damaged sections, replacement of missing cobbles and application of a protective coating to preserve its beauty and integrity;
  • overhaul and refurbishment of the water system; reactivation of the jeux d’eau. A complete overhaul will be performed on the water system of the fountains, including the repair or replacement of damaged components, inspection and optimisation of water flow to ensure proper operation of the jeux d’eau;
  • design of a new artistic lighting system. A new artistic lighting system will be designed to enhance the fountains. Special lights and projectors will be installed to create suggestive light effects and highlight the architectural and sculptural features of the fountains in the evening hours.

All of these interventions will contribute to fully restoring the fountains in all their beauty and functionality and preserving them for future generations.

Caput Mundi: Conservative restoration and enhancement of the Reginald Pole Chapel

The structure is characterised by a circular plan and represents an important and valuable artefact of the 16th century, whose construction is attributed to the English Cardinal Reginald Pole. The chapel recalls the form of Roman temple tombs, with walls marked by eight brick pilaster strips, with peperino capitals and stone plinths supporting an architrave on which a polychrome terracotta dome is set. Two travertine portals were sealed over in the late 1990s, as were the four upper clipei.
The project for the conservative restoration and enhancement of the Chapel includes a series of interventions aimed at preserving and enhancing this important historic building. The roof will be overhauled and, if necessary, waterproofing will be provided to ensure protection from atmospheric agents. The entrances will be unsealed and new wooden portals will be made, thus restoring the original appearance of the entrance. The missing parts of the walls will be rebuilt and consolidated, ensuring the building's stability. Masonry materials such as bricks and stones will be cleaned and consolidated. Painted interior surfaces will be preserved and restored. The floor area will also be cleaned. Finally, the artistic lighting system will be checked and, if necessary, improved to highlight different architectural elements.

Colli d'Oro Park - New construction of a sport facility

The Colli d'Oro park is a large green area located in Labaro, within which stands an unfinished abandoned and unsafe sports facility with thousands of square metres of green space. The project envisages punctual work to restore the greenery, with the aim of returning a reclaimed area to the citizens and enhancing the offer of public services. The project will allow the redevelopment of the urban area with the construction of a new multi-purpose indoor sports facility with 1,500 seats and a total area of 3,700 square metres. Fields will be created for: five-a-side football, basketball, volleyball, crossfit, fitness trail, skate park, mountain biking, while respecting the area's natural features. The intervention is drafted in line with the sustainability and energy efficiency objectives of the principle of “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) to the environment and consistent with the target of 20 per cent less as for the nearly Zero Energy Buildings standard. The ultimate goal is to enhance the park, making it a sports area with free and open access, in order to promote the culture of sport as a tool for social inclusion and integration.
