Caput Mundi: Aurelian Walls section from Porta S. Paolo to the Tiber

The section of the Aurelian Walls between Porta San Paolo and the Tiber River is undergoing a significant conservative restoration, structural consolidation, and enhancement project.

A comprehensive campaign of structural, material, and geological investigations, combined with a detailed visual analysis, has revealed numerous issues, both structural and related to preservation.
In addition to specific structural imbalances, conservation problems have emerged, linked to the deterioration of materials and the presence of weedy vegetation. These factors negatively affect the safety, preservation, and readability of the structure.

The works currently in progress include:

  • securing the structure with temporary steel supports and polyester straps;
  • consolidating the foundations through injections of expanding resins and the construction of reinforced concrete curbs;
  • structural interventions on the upper portions with active metal ties to counteract the thrust of the vaults;
  • cleaning and restoring stone and plastered surfaces using compatible, reversible, and low-visual-impact treatments;
  • removing the existing bituminous membrane and resurfacing the walkway using cocciopesto (building material used in ancient Rome);
  • removing of weedy vegetation and deep root systems.

The interventions aim to restore the stability and integrity of this monumental complex, safeguarding its historical, architectural, and cultural value for future generations.

Structural work will be carried out to restore the stability of several wall structures and the artistic and functional lighting system.

Specifically, the following works and projects are planned:

  • preliminary cleaning operations;
  • elimination of infesting vegetation and biological attacks;
  • conservation works;
  • constitutive and structural reinforcement;
  • construction of electrical and lighting systems;
  • adaptation to legislation on architectural barriers, safety, fire prevention.

Integrated Urban Plans (IUPs): Tor Bella Monaca – Tor Vergata: Redevelopment and energy efficiency of sector R5

The Integrated Plan for the Tor Bella Monaca - Tor Vergata area proposes to address the challenges of the area through different types of interventions, in order to respond concretely to emerging problems. Building renovation will be a priority to address the housing issue, which is essential in a context where housing problems are extremely widespread. Activities will take into account factors such as limiting land consumption, promoting models of urban regeneration and environmental sustainability. All interventions will be synergistically integrated to enhance the cultural heritage, improve energy efficiency in urban areas and promote sustainable mobility.

In detail, new service spaces will be created within the residential courtyards. The energy efficiency of buildings will be implemented in order to promote the use of renewable energy sources and the establishment of Local Energy Communities.

These activities will support sustainable and inclusive development by stimulating new entrepreneurial initiatives.

The Plan will focus on the quality of public space, the enhancement of the archaeological heritage and the promotion of sustainable mobility. Bicycle and pedestrian spaces, connections to the underground stations and connections between Tor Bella Monaca and the Tor Vergata district will be created, including the university campus and the Italian Space Agency.

Redevelopment of the pilgrim services building along the Seven Churches route

The "Farmer's Market Garbatella" building in via Passino 22, Municipality of Rome VIII, owned by Roma Capitale, performs various functions: Municipal Agricultural Market, “Millepiani” coworking and “La Strada” social centre. For these reasons, it is intended to complete and adapt the building according to current regulations, including fire safety, as well as carrying out internal and external painting interventions. The building could also be used for services to those who follow the Seven Churches Pilgrimage route. Currently, the spaces intended for the "Farmer's Market Garbatella" require completion and maintenance, including improvements to the concrete floors and the installation of electrical and water systems. Solutions will be implemented to make the premises accessible, including ramps and toilets, for both visitors and market operators. In addition, interventions will be carried out aimed at enhancing the architectural aspect of the building, with the aim of creating an open space that can be used on a daily basis. In addition, the works will provide for the redevelopment of the former post office on the ground floor, the external facades and the total refunctionalization of the building.
