Upgrading of the underpass on Via Di Portonaccio
Implementing party

Project description
The joint intervention conducted by Csimu, Anas and RFI was mainly aimed at ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists by upgrading the railway underpass and road platform.
Work was carried out to widen the sidewalks located within the railroad underpass by about 2 metres. This widening was accompanied by the installation of 200 traffic barriers to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians between Largo Preneste and Via di Casal Bertone. In addition, the storm drains have been overhauled and maintained to ensure proper stormwater runoff. Sidewalk safety design was handled by the Mobility Department.
All interventions were carried out in close coordination with planned activities for underlying services such as telephone, water and electricity infrastructure. Overall, the work also included the relocation of rainwater collection systems and the construction of a curb in place of the current new jersey barriers in order to improve motorist safety by dividing the lanes outside the underpass.
Anas carried out a deep upgrading of the entire roadbed, employing HARD modified asphalt for both the binder and wear layer. Horizontal road markings were also included, with special attention to crosswalks. For the latter, a plastic casting material was used to ensure greater visibility and durability of the crosswalks. The area of intervention, from Largo Preneste to number 23, in both directions of travel, has a total length of about 1.5 kilometres.
RFI has been in charge of the restoration of the railway underpass, as it is responsible for maintenance. Renovation and repainting of the shoulders of the underpass were carried out, along with the installation of new joint covers to protect them and the cleaning of the light fixtures inside the railway underpass. In addition, RFI conducted a cleanup and clearing of weed vegetation growing near the railroad embankments abutting the underpass.
