Redevelopment of San Sebastiano Park

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The San Sebastiano Park covers 6.5 hectares between Viale delle Terme di Caracalla and Via di Porta San Sebastiano. Its history dates back to Roman times, when it was used as a burial ground and as patrician residences. In the Middle Ages, it was transformed into an area of vegetable gardens and vineyards for the religious complexes around it. Its current conformation dates back to 1925, thanks to the design of Raffaele de Vico, a renowned architect, who conceived the use of the steep terrain by integrating pines, cypresses, laurels and holm oaks.

The current intervention focuses on landscaping and enhancing the park's rich tree heritage, which was extensively used as a heliotherapy colony in the last century.

In particular, the entrances will be restored and enhanced, the flooring of the avenues will be repaired, and measures will be implemented to improve the use of the park by citizens and students. In fact, within the park there is a primary school, part of the Istituto Comprensivo Elsa Morante, which uses a pavilion originally built for student gardeners of the Municipality of Rome.
