Redevelopment of the Angelo Galafati Garden
Implementing party
Roma Capitale – V Municipality
Project description
The idea for the redevelopment of the "Angelo Galafati" Garden, in the heart of the Pigneto district, comes from a participatory design process which involved citizens and technicians of the Municipal Green Areas and Environment, assisted by the Department of the Environment of the Municipality V.
The area where the garden is located is the one in front of the Enrico Toti primary and nursery school which, thanks to the contribution of the Board of Parents, actively participated in the definition of the project idea through numerous meetings held in the school together with other citizens of the neighbourhood.
Specifically, the redevelopment work has had as a key element to eliminate about 500 square metres of concrete surface of the previous garden, in favour of the planting of 53 new trees of 22 different species and 138 shrubs of 20 different species.
The entire green layout is supported by a low water consumption underground micro-irrigation system, which is provided by a pre-existing well built by Metro C at the time of the construction of the Pigneto metro stop, adjacent to the garden.
The trees will also reduce the sunshine on the ground and consequently the temperature in favour of garden users, especially in the now hot Rome summers.
An inclusive play area was also created inside the garden, while the seats were made of recycled wood, recovered from the pergola, present in the previous layout. The new flooring is of the draining type, so to encourage the outflow of rainwater. The work is completed by a track for children's bicycles, a goose game play path drawn on the ground, recycled plastic bench tables equipped with a chessboard, a ping pong table and a basketball hoop.
The redevelopment work has ultimately accepted all the indications from the various protocols and agreements on the environment, which indicate the reduction of heat islands in urban areas, the reuse of materials and the increase in biodiversity.
In a neighbourhood like Pigneto, characterised by a strong presence of multi-ethnic communities, the garden has created a real space for meeting, dialogue and inclusion.
