Project description
Ponte Giulio Rocco, a bridge which crosses the railway in Municipality VIII and connects the Ostiense and Garbatella neighbourhoods, had been closed since 26 October 2016, following the earthquake that hit Central Italy. Demolition and reconstruction work on the bridge began in 2024 thanks to an investment of € 4.8 million, 50% co-financed by Roma Capitale and the Lazio Region, which was the implementing party through the in-house company Astral.
The intervention had a high degree of complexity due to the strategic location of the bridge, which crosses the Roma-Lido railway line and Metro B. This required the utmost care, particularly during the demolition phase, in order to avoid disruption to the public transport network and ensure safety. The new bridge was built in metal and measures 12 metres wide, compared to the 6.40 metres of the old structure. In addition, a widening of the pavements was carried out, with the aim of improving access along the city's central junctions.
