Ponte dell'Industria
Implementing party

Project description
The Ponte dell'Industria is an essential spot that connects the Portuense and Ostiense urban areas, as well as the main arteries of the capital leading to the G.R.A.
The metallic bridge represents a precious testimony of industrial archaeology and that is why it is protected by the Special Superintendence of Rome. On the night between 2 and 3 October 2021, the Bridge suffered a fire that caused part of the reticulated pipe support structure on the Marconi side to collapse. The southern part of the structure was also damaged.
The intervention included the widening of the roadway for the transit of public transport and the construction of a side walkway, on the north side, for the pedestrian crossing.
During the executive design phase, initially unforeseen requirements for improvement of the intervention emerged:
- bridge launch activities;
- conservative restoration of the historical arches of the bridge;
- construction of two side walkways, one for pedestrian crossing and one for cycling;
- increasing the road section of the bridge to allow for the transit of public transport.
Historical restoration
The restoration of the elements of the early 1900s required meticulous work, respectful of the original form and the indications of the Superintendence.
The original studded joints were retained and the damaged elements were reassembled one by one. The current colour comes from stratigraphic essays.
The anti-corrosion treatment, applied entirely by hand, affected 2,000 square metres of surfaces and required 1,300 litres of specialised paint.
Arch Assembly
The positioning of the arches,each weighing approximately 26 tons, was carried out using two cranes with capacity of 400 and 250 tons. Each arch was installed between the reticular beam and the pedestrian walkway, on a system of beams and elastomeric bearings which have been prepared in the previous days.
