Energy efficiency and redevelopment of the "Francesco Orioli" Primary School

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

In a context of improving energy efficiency and the quality of public buildings, the restoration of a considerable number of structures plays a fundamental role. These structures are often insufficiently maintained for the functions they perform and only a small percentage meet minimum energy efficiency requirements. Therefore, the municipal administration focused on school buildings, given their high number on the territory (1,144 units) and their burden on the city's energy balance. To significantly improve their energy efficiency, many of these facilities require substantial retrofitting interventions, aimed at reducing energy consumption and ensuring adequate levels of comfort and environmental sustainability.

The start of an extensive energy re-qualification process also represents an important opportunity to achieve priority objectives such as the standardization of thermal and electrical systems and the adoption of planned and preventive maintenance and adaptation procedures, both for systems and for building structures in general, including fire and anti-seismic ones.

To address the issue of redevelopment and energy efficiency in a massive and timely manner, the financial budget made available by the PN Metro Plus 21/27, will be allocated to the entire municipal territory through a widespread intervention, divided into the 15 Municipalities of the city.

The priority areas of intervention will be the following:

  • "Complex" interventions on the building and on the systems of the school buildings aimed at maximising their energy efficiency;
  • "Simple" interventions on the building and on the systems, including the replacement and improvement of the current heating systems and related interventions, based on the state of obsolescence of the system currently in use.

As for the details of the interventions, we will proceed as follows:

  • insulation of the structure through the installation of thermal insulation systems of the outer and/or inner casing of opaque horizontal (roofs and floors) and vertical structures ("EXTERNAL CLADDING OPTION");
  • total replacement of the windows including fixtures with windows equipped with frames and darkening closure (shutters, blinds, dark);
  • replacement of winter air conditioning systems with condensing hot air generators and radiators in the primary and lower secondary schools, nurseries and kindergartens;
  • installation of solar collectors with glazed surfaces on the roofs of buildings for the production of DHW from Renewable Energy Source;
  • installation of systems equipped with high-efficiency heat pumps and storage tanks of more than 150 litres each, intended for the production of domestic hot water;
  • installation and implementation of devices and systems controlled in an "intelligent" way, even remotely, for the management and maintenance of the building's technological systems;
  • total replacement of the lighting fixtures with new LED technology;
  • installation of photovoltaic systems.
