Renovation of Cederna Belvedere at the Imperial Fora

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

In February 2026, Cederna Belvedere was reopened, a panoramic terrace and walkway overlooking the Imperial Fora and the Colosseum. The area had been closed for several years due to the nearby Metro C construction site. The Belvedere is named after Antonio Cederna, a renowned intellectual who passed away in 1996 and dedicated his life to environmental and cultural battles to protect Rome’s historical and natural heritage. Cederna Belvedere has been outfitted with new urban furniture, while the greenery surrounding the terrace has been restored. Specifically, the Laurus nobilis, Ligustrum, and Nerium oleander shrubs were pruned and secured, along with four large Punica granatum bushes and a Morus alba. Several specimens of Pistacia lentiscus (mastic), Myrtus communis and M. tarentina, Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree), Rhaphiolepis, Abelia grandiflora, Lantana sellowiana, Photinia fraseri 'Little Red', Lavandula (lavender), Westringia fruticosa, Eremophila nivea, Viburnum tinus (laurustinus), Nerium oleander (oleander), and Grevillea rosmarinifolia were replanted. A specimen of Phillyrea latifolia and a Punica granatum bush, both of which grew spontaneously, were recovered in the flowerbed bordering the staircase leading down to the Info Center, on the corner with via del Tempio della Pace; alongside them, two Grevilleas and one Photinia have been added. Additionally, a large Lantana camara bush, which grew spontaneously in the niche containing the 'Fontana del Nicchione' below on the Imperial Fora, has been pruned. All the plants—which are drought-resistant species—come from the San Sisto nursery, the headquarters of Roma Capitale's Garden Service (Servizio Giardini). They were previously used for events, maintained by the city's gardeners, and have now been permanently planted in the Belvedere. Along the path overlooking the Imperial Fora, six benches have also been installed, and planters containing five olive trees and ten lemon trees have been positioned.
