Caput Mundi: Templum Pacis - archaeological excavation, north-east sector

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The intervention will take place in the archaeological excavation of the north-eastern sector of the Templum Pacis. An archaeological area will be created, accessible from various points and fully usable. Visitors will be able to access the Templum Pacis from Trajan’s Column, from Largo della Salara Vecchia, from the Torre dei Conti and from the Forum of Nerva. This way, the Templum Pacis and, through a circuit of walkways, the entire complex of the Imperial Fora and Trajan’s Markets, will become accessible. Furthermore, the two sectors of the Templum Pacis brought to light in 1998-2000 could be joined through the creation of a “bridge” connection. Specifically, the project involves the implementation of the following works:

  • archaeological excavation;
  • conservative restoration of ancient and post-ancient structures;
  • safety measures, anti-seismic and static monitoring of ancient and post-ancient structures;
  • creation of accessible itineraries for visitors (walkways and lift; and, later, on the opposite side, a “bridge” connection on the route of the ancient Via di S. Lorenzo in Miranda);
  • electrical and lighting systems;
  • museum creation, arrangement works and educational communication of archaeological areas.
