Caput Mundi: Fountains in Rome – Restoration of the Fountain in Piazza del Viminale
Implementing party
Project description
The project concerned the preservation and restoration of the Fountain, built by Publio Morbiducci between 1929 and 1931. Inspections were carried out to identify any damage and ascertain its severity. The process began with the consolidation and restoration of the upper basin’s structural continuity, based on the severity of the crack pattern.
First of all, the mortar surface was removed to expose the original travertine and identify further damage. After realigning the basin and recovering the detached parts, any damage was repaired by sealing and bonding the edges. The structural consolidation was ensured by stainless steel bars with improved adherence.
Next, the stone and metal surfaces of the fountain and fence were restored. The interventions involved removing surface deposits, consolidating the surfaces, removing invasive weeds and biocidal treatment of biological patinas. The surfaces were cleaned both mechanically and chemically, the metal parts treated to prevent oxidation, and missing parts integrated through stone tessellation.
The basin inner waterproof coating was removed and appropriate plastering and reinforcements were carried out. The iron elements were overhauled and protected against oxidation. Finally, an ant-graffiti protective coating was applied to the fence columns.
