Archaeological Monumental Site - Imperial Fora area: installation of the walking surface and anastylosis of the architectural elevation of the Forum of Trajan

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The project consists of two separate proposals:

  • For the structural and material consolidation of the existing buildings and the ground floor of the area of the Trajan forensic square, brought to light with the 1998-2000 Jubilee excavation, and that of the Via Alessandrina, brought to light in 2018;
  • For the partial reconstruction of the colonnaded elements of the eastern portico.

A large portion of the concrete floor preparation and a good number of medieval wall fragments are currently preserved in the area. Fragments attributable to this hole and, in particular, to the section of the portico corresponding to the removed sector of Via Alessandrina were placed on the eastern boundary.

In the first case, the aim is to contain and halt the deterioration of the concrete floor preparation—where traces of the original bedding of the white marble slabs removed since the medieval period are still preserved—and to make the medieval elevations statically safe.

The methods and materials used must be safe and have a low visual and physical impact.

In the second case, the redevelopment will contribute to a better legibility of the ancient spatiality thanks to the reconstruction of part of the elevation of the north-eastern sector of the portico that originally delimited the Trajan forensic square. With the discoveries made during the archaeological excavation in Via Alessandrina, the number of fragments attributable to the pavonazzetto shafts of the portico columns has in fact increased compared to the number reached in the excavations in the 1930s, totalling about 40 elements. New column bases were also found, five of which are almost intact.
