Archaeological Monumental Site (CARME) - Via dei Fori Imperiali area: new access to the Forum of Caesar
Implementing party
Project description
The project aims to improve the use of the Imperial Fora Area by constructing a new entrance on the western side of the Forum of Caesar, near the Church of Santi Luca e Martina and the Mamertine Prison, which will facilitate the flow of visitors coming from the Capitoline Hill.
The new entrance to the Imperial Fora will be equipped with a lift to overcome architectural barriers. The infrastructure for the new entrance will be located in the spaces in Via del Tulliano, adjacent to the Forum of Caesar and will include a new area designed to house the ticket office and connect it to the entrances via stairs and lift.
The new facility and lift will be built using materials that are compatible and consistent with the landscape, with low environmental impact but of the highest quality, such as crystal and steel structures, flooring with mixtures of lime, natural earth and aggregates of different Roman pozzolans.
The project also involves the enhancement of areas not currently accessible to the public, offering new visual perspectives to visitors: the spaces enclosed by the walls of the foundations of Accademia di San Luca, dating back to the early 1930s (designed by Gustavo Giovannoni) and the two tabernae of the Forum of Caesar adjacent to the north, rebuilt with funds for the Jubilee of 2000 (figs. 2-3). In these areas, it will be possible to set up museum installations with stone materials from the Forum of Caesar. The flow of visitors to and from the new entrance will be connected, at the level of the Forum, via a special walkway, to the existing security route.
