Extraordinary maintenance and restoration works on the monumental entrance of the Bioparco in Rome

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The intervention involves the conservative restoration of the monumental entrance to the Bioparco in Rome, located in Largo Gassmann, with the aim of ensuring the safe passage of visitors.

The gateway, consisting of a central metal gate, was designed and constructed in the early 20th century by architect Armando Brasini, one of the most renowned architects and urban planners of the twentieth century.

The restoration was particularly complex and was carried out under the careful supervision of the Sovraintendenza Capitolina (Capitoline Superintendency) and the State Superintendency, with valuable collaboration of the Bioparco Foundation. Main activities included: removing accumulated paint layers applied over time to uncover the original layer, which was restored across both structures; restoring existing statues and uncovering the original inscriptions; reinstating two small rooms located inside the gates, formerly used as ticket offices; and finally reconstructing the waterproofing system of both structures and ensuring proper water drainage, always in accordance with the original structure.
