Redevelopment of Porta Maggiore tramway depot
Implementing party

Project description
Among the interventions scheduled in preparation for the Jubilee, the renewal of the tram fleet is planned to improve the quality of the surface rail transport service. The new trams will replace the current vehicles, namely the Stanga trams (supplied in 1948) and the Socimi trams (dating back to 1990). The vehicles will be equipped with several innovative features, such as the ability to operate autonomously with batteries on non-electrified sections. During construction of the designated maintenance site, the new trams will be placed in the Porta Maggiore depot. The unique characteristics of the new vehicles will require the following specific interventions:
- construction of steel structures, equipped with security systems, to access the upper deck;
- creation of two overhead cranes to move equipment on the trams, with the simultaneous removal of the overhead network above the tracks intended for this activity;
- renovation of a warehouse to accommodate a new underfloor wheel lathe for wheel maintenance and an automatic system to measure the geometric parameters of the wheels;
- installation of a new system for washing undercarriage components.
