Parco Tiberis has been completely transformed and opened to the public, which will now be able to enjoy it all year round. The park covers an area of 1.9 hectares, surrounded by the ruins of the ancient Villa di Pietra Papa, the nearby Basilica of San Paolo Fuori Le Mura, as well as the 20th-century bridge, Ponte Marconi, and the recently opened park, Parco Marconi.

The project involved extending and improving this green space along the left bank of the Tiber River, to make it a permanently open space, rather than a space that is only accessible during the summer months.

The redevelopment project included a major removal of invasive vegetation across more than 11,400 square metres. Following this, 101 new trees, 1,430 shrubs and 630 marsh and aquatic species were planted. In addition, approximately 5,400 square metres of lawn were restored as part of the renaturalisation of the riverbanks.

The historic tamarisk grove was restored and a small water garden was created, featuring 10 pools and a variety of plant species.

At the heart of the project is the creation of a large Piazza dell'‘Acqua or water park. This can be flooded in summer, borrowing from the traditional Roman water parks, to become a swimming pool for cooling off. In the winter it can be used as a sort of amphitheatre for events and performances.

The pathways have been upgraded with permeable surfaces, and approximately 200 square metres of wooden decking has been installed, featuring water jets to alleviate the heat, fed by recirculated water from the ‘nasoni’ fountains. A wetland system has also been installed to treat the water from the cisterns and the bridge’s drainage, consisting of a reed bed of Arundo donax and Sambucus nigra plants as natural ‘filters’. To improve the park’s sports facilities, the two existing beach volleyball courts have been completely refurbished. The archaeological discovery of the foundations of a Roman-era building during the works inevitably led to delays in completing the project.

The park’s facilities are completed by a relaxation area with deckchairs, umbrellas and showers, a fenced-off dog area, toilet facilities and a kiosk with a shaded refreshment area.

Tiberis is open to the public every day from 8 am to 10 pm and has been added to Rome’s network of riverside parks, alongside Ponte Milvio, Foro Italico, Prati dell’Acqua Acetosa, Lungotevere delle Navi, Ostia Antica, Marconi and Magliana.
