Forestation of the Estate of Castelporziano

Implementing party

Roma Capitale
Città Metropolitana di Roma

Project description

The investment involves the implementation of forestry interventions in the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale with the aim of improving air quality, reducing the effects of climate change, combating the loss of biodiversity for the benefit of the health and well-being of citizens.

Among the areas involved is the Presidential Estate, one of the three residences of the Presidency of the Italian Republic, which in recent years has also become an open and accessible place for citizens. The Estate, which covers a total of 6,000 hectares within Municipality X, constitutes an ecosystem characterised by a rare environmental richness, in which forests, dunes, wetlands and Mediterranean scrub coexist, populated by a multitude of animal species and enriched by the presence of historical finds.

In recent years, however, about 1000 hectares of pine forest have been decimated due to two invasive parasites.

The project involves the forestation of 12 areas located in different parts of the Presidential Estate of Castelporziano including "Dogana", "Santola", "Tor Paterno", for a total of 337 hectares and 337,000 plants of 54 native tree and shrub species, of which about 100,000 have already been planted among trees and shrubs. The duration of the project is 5 years following the planting of the plants, in which crop care is provided (replacement of seedlings, emergency irrigation, mowing...).

The ecological effects of the intervention on the Estate will be monitored thanks to a scientific project also funded by the PNRR and carried out thanks to the collaboration between the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, the National Biodiversity Future Center, the CNR and other national research centers, which are transforming the Estate into a real Living Lab: an open-air laboratory for scientific experimentation on sustainable forest management methods.
