Archaeological Monumental Site - Piazza di Porta Capena area: renovation and preparation of Casina Vignola Boccapaduli
Implementing party
Project description
The project transformed the Casina Vignola Boccapaduli into an information point for the use of the entire Caelian area. This is an area of great value where the ancient routes, the 19th-century plot of the city centre, the Caelian Park, the Aurelian Walls and the Colosseum valley intersect. Piazza di Porta Capena is a vast flat area between the Caelian, the Palatine and the Aventine and is named after the ancient gate that led onto the Via Appia. A short distance from the ruins of the walls is Casino Vignola Boccapaduli, built in 1538 for Prospero Boccapaduli, Conservatore in Campidoglio.
The building opens on the ground floor with a travertine portico, consisting of three arches on the front and two on the sides, above which runs a Doric frieze, while the main floor has architrave around the windows. The arcade is now used as a reception area with visitor services, and has been equipped with thermal and acoustic insulated glazing and air conditioning systems. The previously deteriorated wooden window frames were replaced with new wooden frames with thermal break, similar to the existing ones in colour, size and type. There were also removed architectural barriers, such as the construction of an external access ramp, consistent with the historical and landscape context. Finally, a new lighting system was installed, both inside and outside the portico, as well as extraordinary maintenance of the gates.
