Archaeological Monumental Site (CARME) - Via dei Fori Imperiali area: cross-connection of Via Bonella

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The aim of the intervention is to create a pedestrian connection between Via dei Fori Imperiali (central sector) and the widening on the slopes of the Capitoline Hill between the Mamertine Prison, the access to the Roman Forum and the façade of the Church of Santi Luca e Martina. The widening can now be reached from the Clivo Argentario and the stairway down from the Campidoglio/Via di San Pietro in Carcere. Via Bonella was laid out at the end of the 16th century in the context of urbanisation of the green spaces around the Forum of Augustus and the Forum of Caesar. The street connected the Arch of the Pantani with the slopes of the Capitoline Hill, passing in its last stretch to the west between the Curia building and the Church of Santi Luca e Martina.

In the course of archaeological investigations, which led to the discovery of the southern sector of the Forum of Caesar at the end of the last century, Via Bonella was removed in its central section. Today, two sections remain: the one to the west coincides with the last section of the ancient road, the one to the east represents a busy overlook to the archaeological area from Via dei Fori Imperiali. The project involves the construction of a light, suspended pedestrian connection between the two sections—a "walkway". The connection must not interfere with the accessibility, including visual accessibility, of the archaeological area and will therefore be designed according to criteria of minimal impact on the surrounding monumental context. This would restore a route which, in view of the final layout of the Central Archaeological Area, would serve as a connection between the Imperial Fora on one side and, on the other, the complex urban hub formed by the slopes of the Capitoline Hill, the northernmost sector of the Roman Forum with one of the entrances to the archaeological area, the Tullianum, with the Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami and, finally, the square in front of the Church of Santi Luca e Martina. Linked to the construction of the walkway is the redevelopment of the green area behind the apse of the Church of Santi Luca e Martina, planned as part of the Jubilee interventions with the project Archaeological Monumental Site – Via dei Fori Imperiali area: new access to the Forum of Caesar
