The fountains in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano and Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore are located in two squares of great importance for the Jubilee routes.
The restoration included various activities:
- preliminary inspection: a preliminary assessment was carried out to assess the solidity and adherence of the tessellation and identify any sections that were detached or at risk of detachment;
- conservative restoration of surfaces: the stone surfaces of the fountains were restored to preserve their original appearance;
- inspection of metal elements: an evaluation was performed to determine the condition and function of metal elements.
- technological system restoration: the technological systems connected to the fountains were restored;
- maintenance of surrounding areas and fences: maintenance interventions were carried out in the areas surrounding the fountains and on the fences around them.
The conservative restoration of the stone surfaces included the following works:
- preliminary activities: reinforcement and repair operations were performed on unsafe parts;
- chemical and mechanical cleaning: chemical and mechanical methods were used on the stone surfaces to thoroughly clean the surfaces and remove dirt, limescale and other impurities;
- disinfection and weeding: treatments were applied to disinfect the surfaces and eliminate any unwanted invasive weeds;
- reinforcement: reinforcement interventions were carried out to improve the stability of the stone surfaces;
- removal of non-functional elements: any damaged elements were removed to ensure the overall integrity of the surfaces;
- treatment of metal parts: metal parts on the stone surfaces underwent specific treatments to ensure their durability;
- plastering and tessellation: plastering and plastic integration were performed to restore missing or damaged parts of the stone surfaces;
- application of the final protective coating: a final protective coating was applied on the stone surfaces to preserve them from weather and wear.
- the removal of the basin waterproofing layer was followed by:
- renovation of the underlying screed;
- coating of a new waterproof layer.
